Delicious Lentil Soup served with Whole Wheat Bread & a simple Salad

Lentil/Masoor Dhal Soup

Brown lentils are known as Masoor in Hindi. This lentil has a dark brown skin and also comes in a small and large size.

When the skin has been removed the lentils are a peach color but are then known as red lentils. The lentil with the skin and without, can be cooked in a variety of ways to produce delicious meals. This red lentil soup recipe is just one of several ways to prepare this versatile lentil.

You can use a pressure cooker to soften the lentils or the regular method of boiling it in a pot with 3 cups of water. If using a pressure cooker please follow the directions on how to use it.

This recipe is suitable for Vegans as there are no dairy prodcts used.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups red lentils/masoor
  • 4 tablespoons oil canola oil
  • 1 tsp. mustard seeds
  • ½ cup sliced onion
  • 1 cup canned crushed tomato or 1 cup sliced fresh tomato
  • 3 green and 3 dried red chilies- more if you like it spicy
  • 3 full teaspoons crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon crushed ginger
  • 1 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1½ teaspoon salt (Adjust to your taste)
  • 2 sprigs of washed and chopped Cilantro

Method

  • Pick lentils, wash and boil in about 8 cups of water
  • Add salt. When it begins "foaming," try and scoop as much of the "foam" as you can
  • Add oil and the rest of the ingredients
  • Stir well and cook on medium to low heat
  • If you use a pressure cooker, this dhal will be ready in 10 minutes
  • If using a regular pot, cook until mushy
  • Add water to thin the mixture to the consitency a flowing soup
  • Garnish with cilantro
  • Serve with bread, rice or rotis
